Meiji-era US History in Japanese
[Elementary History of the United States] Beikoku shoshi
Notes: While not credited by name, this is (apparently) a Japanese translation of J. D. Quakenbos's Elementary History of the United States, offered as a high school textbook during the Meiji era.
It is a relatively early account of American history published for a mainstream Japanese audience. This translation omits the in-text illustrations of the original but it does include folding world and US maps. The maps appear to be printed with a combination of lithography and woodblocks, with the outlines and borders printed using lithography and with the color done with woodblocks.
[2], 2, 8, 359, [13, colophon and publisher's ads] pages. Two inserted folding maps. 5-1/4 by 7-1/2 inches.
