Inscribed to a Poet Laureate
Wild Oats and Fireweed: New Poems
Publication: New York: Perennial Library / Harper & Row, 1988. First Edition.
Notes: Le Guin's previously published and unpublished poems written between 1981 and 1987.
90 pages.
Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, wrappers issue; also published simultaneously in hardcover). A near fine paperback. This is an exceptional association copy, inscribed by Le Guin to William Stafford, the Oregon Poet who was also the Poet Laureate of the United States (in pro-business America, it is fitting that this position is officially the "consultant in poetry" to the Library of Congress). The book is inscribed, "for Bill* & Dorothy from Ursula with love. January '88" Le Guin then adds the asterisk, "* especially p. 59", referring to the poem entitled, "For Bill Stafford." Stafford has then added Le Guin's Portland address and the date, 27 Jan 88, apparently to denote where he got the book.
Le Guin association copies are few and far between.
