Early Latin American Call for Decriminalizing Abortion

Gotas amargas (el aborto criminal y la ley)

Notes: A short monograph whose title translates roughly to Bitter Tears (Criminal Abortion and the Law). Becerro de Bengoa, a physician, advocates reforming the Uruguayan abortion law. In this book, he is generally sympathetic to pregnant women seeking abortions and proposes fining women for having abortions, rather than giving them jail time. He also advocates for requiring men to pay support for fathering children out of wedlock and jail for those who don't pay.

This is one of the first works published in Latin America supporting decriminalization of abortion. The author also published books on gynecology and the treatment of various diseases of women.

Rather scarce, with only two copies in US libraries, at the Library of Congress and the University of Arizona.
