A Classic Suite of Moebius Images

La Cité Feu (City of Fire) Portfolio

Notes: A densely illustrated and inventively imagined suite of eight (8) images made by Moebius (pseudonym of Jean Gerard) in collaboration with Geof Darrow, a Moebius fan and comic illustrator. Darrow met Moebius in Los Angeles when Moebius was working on Walt Disney's Tron movie. He later went to Paris where he and Moebius collaborated on this series of images. Darrow made the initial pencil drawings, and Moebius traced them in ink, reworking the scenes as he went and adding color.

These images are like concept paintings for a science fiction film set in a densely populated city of humans, humanoids, and fanciful animals. All one needs is a plot.

The prints are enclosed in a blue cloth-covered folding portfolio, with interior folding flaps. There are eight color images, including two double-size plates. There are three one-color plates, including the limitation page, a credits page, and a page of introductory text by Moebius. The edition was limited to 950 copies plus 500 copies for a somewhat different US edition. The plates, printed with offset lithography, measure just over 14-1/2 by 19-1/4 inches and 29 by 19-14 (for the folding plates).

This complete portfolio is scarce; one finds individual prints for hundreds of dollars each.

Edition + Condition: First edition. The plates are fine or nearly so, with a bit of handling signs at the corners. The portfolio is bumped at the top corner with a short crack on the rear joint. The back panel of the portfolio has a small horizontal stain. The bumping does not affect the plates. This is copy 2 of 950, a very desirable low number. The suite is signed on the limitation page by Darrow and Moebius.
