Manuscript Letter, Signed by the Indigenous Latin American Writer and Diplomat

Notes: Original letter signed "Vicente Pazos" to British Member of Parliament G. R. Robinson, the chairman of the Committee of Spanish American Bondholders, protesting negative press in the London papers and asking for a letter of support from the committee.

The letter was written by a secretary and signed by Pazos Kanki.

Pazos Kanki (1779–1845) was Aymara, born in the highlands of what is now Bolivia. He spoke Aymara, Quechua, Spanish, and English; and obtained a doctorate in theology at the University at Cuzco. He became a "warrior for independence" and spent most of his life abroad, particularly in Philadelphia and later London. While in Philadelphia, he published several books. In the late 1820s, he went to Londow where he served as the Consul general under two Bolivian presidents. It is in this role that he wrote the present letter.

Manuscript material (or books for that matter) by Pazos Kanki is scarce. See Rodrigo Lazo, Letters from Philadelphia, pp. 128–135, for a discussion of Pazos Kanki's life and politics.

Edition + Condition: A single sheet, folded for mailing; docketed in an unknown hand on the back (verso). Staining to lower right corner near the signature; inconsequential areas of separation along the folds.
