Rolling Stone Bound Volume

Rolling Stone: Issue Numbers Forty-six through Sixty, November 15, 1969 through June 11, 1970

Notes: The fourth set of fifteen issues, offered by Rolling Stone in oversized hardcover volumes. These issues have stories on Bob Dylan, Ken Kesey, the Stooges, Timothy Leary, the prosecution of the Chicago 8, Paul McCartney, and hundreds of other musical and cultural icons of the era.

These issues feature Ben Fong Torres as one of the keenest music reporters, and they document the newspaper-magazine's rapid ascension from San Francisco music scene publication to the paper of record for the rock music business.

"This collection...was bound by the Cardoza-James Bindery in San Francisco. They were printed by the Garrett Press of San Francisco. The paper is 34-pound supertone newsprint stock, with the exceptions of the outside and inside sheets which are a 45-pound Mustang book stock. The type face of the body text is eight-point Times Roman, and the headline face is 18- and 24-point Times Roman...." Oh, to be young again and able to read 8-point type with ease! The preceding text comes from the first page in the book, describing the publication details. This volume appears to have been made from unsold copies of the tabloid magazine, flattened, with slight evidence of the original center folds.

848 pages. Issues 46 to 60. 11-1/8 by 16-3/4 inches.

Edition + Condition: First edition, bound. The issues themselves are a bit tanned, as usual, but they are otherwise fine (many sets show signs of reading; this one does not). The binding is fine but for some bumping to the corners. A very nice example of this scarce original bound volume of early issues.

Publication: San Francisco: Straight Arrow Publishers, 1970.
