Scarce Cocktail Book from Mexico

Notes: A scarce Mexican book with about 300 cocktail recipes published at the beginning of the 1960s by a noted cookbook author.

A handful of the recipes reflect Mexican ingredients, like the Tequila Cocktail, which combines tequila, grenadine, a few drops of absinthe, lemon juice, and an olive garnish. Many of the other cocktails are variations that substitute local and Spanish ingredients for the French products often used in American cocktails. For example, the Spanish Cocktail (Cóctel Español) is a reworking of Jerry Thomas's Porto Flip, calling for port, triple sec (instead of brandy), egg yolk, honey (instead of sugar), and cinnamon (in lieu of nutmeg).

This is an interesting and little known cocktail book deserving of further study. OCLC records two copies, at UTSA and Biblioteca Nacional de México, despite the colophon's indication that 9000 copies were printed.

152 pages. 4-1/4 by 6-1/2 inches.

Edition + Condition: First edition (states "Primera Edición, 1961" on the title page). A near fine copy in wrappers (paperback), but for two leaves at the back with brittle old folded corners. Scarce.
