This work was published soon after Thompson (1860–1948) assumed the post of professor of natural history at the University of Dundee, Scotland, his first professional job. He is best known for his book On Growth and Form.
This is Thompson's first substantive book, although there may be offprints of articles issues separately prior to this volume.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing). Very good to near fine in the original publisher's binding. There is a University of London bookplate on the front pastedown, with a discreet withdrawn stamp; there is also a small ink university stamp on the lower margin of the last page, also over-stamped "withdrawn".
