Signed on a Bookplate
The Gashlycrumb Tinies or, After the Outing
Notes: The best alphabet book ever, in which unlucky children meet their maker, beginning with "A is for Amy who fell down the stairs" and ending with "Z is for Zillah who drank too much gin."
The book was reissued many times over the decades. This Harcourt edition, issued without a dust jacket, finally found its footing and has been reprinted dozens of times in the last 30 years. When I owned a new bookstore, we left it on the front table and sold the hell out of it.
6-1/4 by 5 inches.
Edition + Condition: This is the first printing of this version (with ABCDE on the copyright page). A fine hardcover copy. Signed by Gorey on the "Mystery" bookplate so often seen.
Publication: New York: Harcourt Brace & Company, 1991.
