Notes: A three-quarters-length seated portrait of trade union advocate and economist George Gunton (1845–1919). Gunton was born in England and emigrated to the US in the 1870s. Gunton wrote a treatise on the eight-hour work day and the economics books Wealth and Progress and Principles of Social Economics. He also published The Social Economist (later Gunton's Magazine).
