18th C. Painted Vellum Binding with Carrying Case
H Kaine Diatheke. Novum Testamentum [Greek New Testament]
Notes: An attractive pocket Greek New Testament with a painted vellum binding and the original leather slipcase. The covers have a decorative border and a central design tooled in gilt and handpainted. The front cover depicts the Crucifixion of Jesus; the back cover's central image is of the Virgin Mary with the Baby Jesus. Befitting the book's Dutch origin, there are variegated (or "broken") tulips incorporated into the design on both covers. The spine is flat but tooled to suggest bands and five compartments. All edges are gilt and the top and bottom edges are gauffered near the spine with dots arranged in semi-circles.
There were similarly bound editions in 1751 and 1765.
Edition + Condition: Cover paint worn at the corners (due to a snug fitting case), else generally very good and complete. The text block is clean with little or no foxing.
Publication: Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden]: Officina Luchtmanniana, 1760.
