Gandhi on Non-violence
Non-Violence in Peace and War [2 Volumes]
Publication: Ahmedabad, India: Navajivan Publishing House, 1948–1949. First Edition.
Notes: A mixed set (third edition of volume one and first edition of volume two) of this collection of short essays on aspects of the principles of non-violence. Both volumes collect pieces published in Gandhi's periodicals Young India and its successor Harijan. Volume one collects pieces from 1920 to 1942 (Harijan ceased publishing during the Second World War and Gandhi's Quit India campaign). Volume two collects pieces published between 1946 and 1948, including a detailed account of his public statement in the days before his assassination on January 30, 1948.
A selection of these pieces, edited by Thomas Merton, remains in print from New Directions.
xii,512; xvi, 403 pages. Volume 1 was first published in 1942 in an edition of 2,000 copies. The second edition (really, printing) was in 1944 (2,200 copies); this third printing, 6,000 copies in 1948. The second volume was published in an edition of 5,000 copies in 1949.
Edition + Condition: Third edition of volume one; first edition of volume two. A very good set in very good dust jackets. Indian books are typically made from inexpensive materials and they wear easily. These books have minor chipping to the edges and some typical foxing but are nicer than one would expect.
