With Two Sherlock Holmes Stories, in a Dust Jacket
The Doings of Raffles Haw and Other Stories [Sherlock Holmes]
Publication: New York: George H. Doran, 1919. First Edition.
Notes: Not to be confused with the 1890s book with a similar title. This volume collects the title novella, a story about an inventor who masters the age-old dream of alchemists of turning lead into gold, plus two Sherlock Holmes stories, The Red-Headed League and The Boscombe Valley Mystery.
Of the title work, Bleiler (Science Fiction: The Early Years, 607) says it is "not so much a narrative of events as a theme novel...the theme is the corrupting power of money... Critical opinion has usually dismissed The Doings of Raffles Haw lightly, but I would regard it as one of Doyle's better books."
