Letter from Korda to McMurtry Laid In
With Wings Like Eagles: A History of the Battle of Britain
Publication: New York: Harper, 2009. First Edition.
Notes: Larry McMurtry's copy of this volume of World War II history written by his editor. With McMurtry's bookplate and a typed letter, signed, by Korda about McMurtry's marriage to Faye Kesey laid in.
For several decades, Michael Korda was Larry McMurtry's editor at Simon and Schuster. Korda also wrote a number of books, many on military history, like this one. This copy has McMurtry's stirrup bookplate mounted to the front pastedown. A letter from Korda, apparently responding to an invitation for Korda and his wife to attend McMurtry's wedding to Faye Kesey, is laid. In part Korda writes, "What wonderful, indeed amazing good fortune, and how courageous to re-embark on marriage at our age! We would both love to be with you, but to be frank, I don't think I'm up to managing that long a trip—it's been years since I've been on an airplane...I hope that you and Faye will eventually come to New York and that we can take you out to dinner to celebrate."
McMurtry had known Faye Kesey and her late husband, Ken, since the early 1960s. He married her in 2011. McMurtry was an accomplished antiquarian bookseller, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist (for Lonesome Dove), and an Oscar-winning screenwriter (for Brokeback Mountain).
Edition + Condition: First edition (stated, with a numberline ending in 1). A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. With McMurtry's bookplate on the front pastedown. The letter from Korda to McMurtry is folded twice for mailing and is signed "Michael."
