Notes: Larry McMurtry's copy of this book that described Japan, Korea, China, and the Philippines for an American audience. The author was an artist who was born in Iowa and split her time as an adult between China, Japan, and the U.S.

Lum studied at the Chicago Art Institute and learned woodblock carving in Japan; she was one of the few Western women who made color woodblock prints in the Japanese style. Several examples of her prints are in the Smithsonian.

315 pages. Illustrated from 16 line drawings by the author.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing). A very good copy in a very good dust jacket that is missing small pieces from the edges. A small area of the spine cloth has a dampstain.

With the bookplate of William John Eck, an executive with Southern Railway Company who purchased the first commercial transatlantic airplane ticket, and also with the stirrup bookplate of the Pulitzer and Academy Award winning Texas writer, Larry McMurtry.
