Notes: A signed first edition of this sequel to The Desert Rose, from McMurtry's library in Archer City, Texas, and his bookplate mounted to the inside front cover.

Most of McMurtry's own copies of books were not signed—why would an author sign his own book? Probably for the usual reason—he signed it for someone and then for some reason didn't give it away. In your humble cataloguer's experience with author's libraries, this is not a common experience, but most writers have one or two such books on their shelves.

McMurtry was a leading bookseller, a Pulitzer Prize winning novelist (for Lonesome Dove), and an Academy Award winning screenwriter (for Brokeback Mountain). Apropos of nothing, for a funny looking guy, he dated a lot of movie stars (Cybill Shepherd and Diane Keaton, among others). Hardly anyone succeeds at antiquarian bookselling, novel writing, the film business, or dating stars. Somehow McMurtry did all four—enough living for several lifetimes.
