Cole Weston Directs a Play
The Women [The Forest Theater Guild poster]
Publication: Carmel: The Forest Guild Theatre, [1952?].
Notes: A poster for a local theater revival of Claire Booth Luce's 1936 play, The Women, directed by the noted photographer Cole Weston, the son of Edward Weston.
Weston, in addition to taking his own photographs and printing from his father's negatives, worked with the Forest Theater Guild in Carmel, on the California coast, for many years, directing plays. The Forest Theater operated from the turn of the century until the 1950s and was revived in the early 1970s. This poster seems to date from the original run.
Poster. 14 by 22 inches. Printed in black on tan with highlights in yellow paint. Dating from either 1952 or 1958, based on the years when September 12 was a Friday. Ticket prices in the early 1950s were typically $1 to $2 at the Forest Theater, which most likely places this poster in 1952.
Edition + Condition: A near fine copy. Lower corners are creased.
