Rare Positive Account of a Hash High, 1888

Herrings' Extract Cannabis Indica: Or the Results of Hashish by the "New York World" Reporter. Experiments on Himself with the Drug

Publication: London: E. Couchman & Co., Ltd., 1888. First Edition.

Notes: A 19th century account, possibly unrecorded, of the effects of taking hashish written by a reporter for the New York World newspaper. He describes highs ("a thrill unspeakable"), followed by a crash ("the marrow was all gone from my bones"), that turned into hallucinations ("each drop of water had its name, its life, its sense). His experience, he reports, was positive, like being in "a world where there are no limitations."

The author obtained his hashish first by convincing a physician to describe it and then by encouraging a pharmacist to give him a bigger dose. Those drugs had no effect. He then obtained Herrings' extract of cannabis, which was potent.

A scarce pamphlet, printed in London, from an account credited as having appeared in the New York World, Sunday, April 29, 1888. 8 pages; stapled self-wrappers. 8-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing). The pamphlet was folded four times, leaving a pattern of old fold lines, else very good.
