Comic Heath Robinson Drawing
Original Ink Drawing [The Baby Thief]
Notes: An original pen-and-ink line drawing illustration of a man carrying bundles of babies. When this drawing was purchased by the previous owner, it was titled "the baby thief" on the invoice. The intent might also have been humorous, as a young bird, perhaps a fledgling stork, seems to be saying something to the man, who could be delivering babies. Robinson was such a prolific illustrator that I have not been able to determine where it was published, but as a finished drawing, it almost certainly was.
The image is 9 by 12 inches on a 11-3/8 by 18-5/8 inch sheet of paper.
W. Heath Robinson (1872–1944) illustrated dozens of books and produced cartoons and humorous drawings for many publications. A museum dedicated to his work opened in 2016.
Edition + Condition: The paper is slightly toned and the paper is missing a half-inch open tear at the top left corner. On close examination, one can still see the original pencil sketch underlying the ink. Robinson handprinted his name below the drawing. There are remnants of hinging tape along the top edge.
