Clausen was a professor of painting and founder of the New England Art Club known for his landscapes. His lectures cover light, color, landscape and plein air painting, realism and Impressionism, as well as artists like Titian, Velasquez, and Rembrandt. The book went through three editions.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, with 1904 on the title page and no indication of later printings). A very good copy in green cloth. This copy is inscribed, "To Mrs. Vaughan Davies, with the author's kind regards. June, 1904." Very scarce signed.
