Notes: A pamphlet version, in English and Amharic, of Haile Selassie's speech made upon his return to the capital Addis Ababa following the defeat of the Fascist Italian army, which had seized the country in 1935.
In this speech, Selassie, who came to power in 1916, described previous Italian incursions into the country, protested atrocities at the hands of the Fascist invaders, praised his soldiers for their "fighting spirit", acknowledged the help of the British Army, and asked Ethiopians to let the disarmed Italians retreat in peace ("Take care not to soil the good name of Ethiopia by acts which are worthy of the enemy"). He also announced that "a fresh chapter of history of the New Ethiopia begins."
