Notes: An original watercolor and gouache painting published in the British magazine Look and Learn on November 3, 1973 (issue 616, pp. 2–3).
According to the publication's website, the subject of this illustration is "Brutus watched unflinchingly from his seat on the high tribunal as his two sons, who had been guilty of taking part in a conspiracy, were beheaded in front of him."
11-1/4 by 17 inches on a 14 by 20 (roughly) piece of illustration board. The painting is rendered in grays, browns, and blacks, for good reproduction in black and white, with white highlights in gouache.
McBride (1931–2007) was known for his historical illustrations, particularly those with a military theme.
Edition + Condition: The painting is fine; there are production notes in red and blue ink in the margins. The work is signed "McB."
