Poet Tom Clark Manuscript

Manuscript of a Short Review of Fightin' by Simon Ortiz

Publication: [Berkeley]: 1984.

Notes: A short, 100-word review of Simon Ortiz's collection of short stories about Navajos and Okies in the Southwest, in both the original, handwritten version and a carbon-copy typescript. Both are signed by Clark.

Clark (1941–2018) was the poetry editor of The Paris Review for most of the 1960s; he later moved to California where he was well-known in San Francisco Bay Area poetry circles.

Two leaves, with an autograph letter, signed, by Neil Ortenberg, the founder of Thunder's Mouth Press, the publisher of Ortiz's book, written to Clark seeking help publicizing Fightin'.

SOURCE: This was part of the closing inventory of Serendipity Books, in Berkeley, which I bought when I was the co-owner of Eureka Books more than ten years ago. When I moved to Portland, Oregon, I brought some boxes of books to catalog remotely, this among them. When I sold Eureka Books, part of the deal was that I would keep the items I had in Portland and Eureka Books would keep any items of mine left behind in California. Almost every week I go looking for a reference book that I know I have only to realize that it's probably in my old office in Eureka.

Edition + Condition: All three leaves folded in half, else near fine.
