The Butcher Boy [Suntup Numbered / Book Designer's PC Copy]

Publication: [Irving, CA]: Suntup Press, 2022.

Notes: This is a PC copy of the numbered issue, limited to 350 numbered books and a small group of PC (publisher's) copies. Paul Suntup gave this PC copy to Michael Russem in acknowledgement of his work as the book's designer.

According to the Suntup website, the numbered edition has "a full leather binding covered in genuine pig suede. The cover and spine are blind stamped and the edition is housed in a slipcase covered with acid free Kraft butcher paper. It is signed by Patrick McCabe and David Lupton." This copy is also signed by Russem on the colophon.

Of the Suntup Press books with inherent vice (the tendency in an object or material to deteriorate or self-destruct because of its intrinsic internal characteristics including...unstable materials and incompatibility of different materials), this is one of the most fragile. The suede leather is a cool touch, but it attracts fingerprints and it wears a little every time the book goes in or out of the slipcase (Life of Pi, another book with a full-leather binding, came with a drop-side box so that the book could be removed without scraping the edges).

Michael Russem designed and printed innovative fine press books for his own Kat Ran Press for many years; he now runs a design bookstore and gallery near Cambridge, Massachusetts, and he also designs books for many publishers. Among the books he designed for Suntup Press include Slaughterhouse-Five, Silence of the Lambs, Blood Meridian, and The Handmaid's Tale.

With six full-page color illustrations by Lupton.

Edition + Condition: A fine copy in a fine slipcase. Signed by McCabe, Lupton, and Russem on the colophon page. With the publisher's bookmark for this title laid in. Leather shows some fingerprints and a touch of wear at the edges, as expected.
