Rare Promotional Piece of Japanese Colony in California
Yamato Colony
Publication: San Francisco: American Land and Produce Co., (n.d., but ca. 1910). First Edition.
Notes: A rare promotional brochure encouraging Japanese investment and settlement in the Yamato Colony, in Merced County, California.
The colony was established by Kyutaro Abiko, who purchased 3,200 acres through his company, the American Land and Produce Co. The venture was perhaps the most successful of projects to set up Japanese farming communities in the United States; through mergers and name changes, the Livingston Cooperative Society, a joint-marketing effort for the farmers, continues to this day.
Original promotional materials from the Yamato Colony are very scarce, with no obvious items recorded in OCLC.
7-15/16 by 8-7/8 inches. 16 pages, including a double-page map centerfold.
Edition + Condition: First ediiton (first printing). Staples rusted; some leaves coming loose, but generally very good.
