A guide to gold and silver coins giving their quantity of pure metal to allow comparisons between various currencies. The coins are reproduced in reverse (black for the plain metal; stamping in white), with tables facing them providing details of their metallic composition. This is the first edition—the book was reprinted a number of times in the 1880s; the first printing is scarce—the most recent auction listing of this 1880 edition is from a sale in 1919.
112 pages. 12-1/4 by 9 inches, bound in reddish-orange pebbled cloth stamped in black and gold.
Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, with 1880 on the title and copyright pages). Minor wear to the spine ends, else a near fine copy. Previous owner's name dated 1881 on the front blank; purple inkstamp of the Exchange Bank of Greenville, Ohio on several pages.
