Original Photograph of the Founder of the Theosophical Society

[Olcutt, Henry Steel]

Publication: [ca. 1900].

Notes: A large cabinet card photograph of one of the early Theosophists and one of the best-known European converts to Buddhism in the 19th century. Olcott (1832–1907) helped revive Buddhism in Sri Lanka, a contribution for which he was honored by a postage stamp with his portrait.

This view of Olcott in profile, seems to have been his preferred post, although this particular image has not been widely reproduced.

This silver print measures roughly 6-3/4 by 8-1/2 inches on a slightly larger card mount. The mount does not have a photographer's name or logo.

Edition + Condition: The print has silvered at the edges and there are small spots of surface loss, mostly to the background of the image. In all, a nice portrait of Olcott.
