Terrific Inscription
The Gypsy's Curse
Publication: New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1974. First Edition.
Notes: A remarkable copy of Crews’s strange and memorable novel, increasingly hard to find signed and almost never with an inscription like this.
208 pages.
Edition + Condition: First edition (stated). The jacket shows minor soiling to the textured cream stock (which, as usual, attracts dirt like a Dustbuster), and the spine is just lightly sunned. A touch of shelfwear to the board edges and spine ends; endpapers slightly browned from the binding glue, but less than usual, small spot on the front free endpaper. A review slip is laid in.
This copy comes from the collection of the late Tom Garner, a friend and admirer of Crews who often persuaded the author to expand on his dedications. This one’s a standout.
Crews addressed the inscription: "Tom:", then he circled the printed dedication, “This book is for John Ciardi.” Below it, Crews writes: "A poet who taught me—never in the classroom—and treated me like a son. Dead now. And so it goes. Harry Crews."
Housed in one of Garner’s signature black cloth clamshell boxes.
