Following the Equator: A Journey Around the World

Publication: Hartford, CT: The American Publishing Company, 1897. First Edition.

Notes: A long collection of travel sketches and social commentary. Twain began to travel in the mid-1890s because he needed the money, having lost a good part of his fortune through bad investments. While abroad he lectured in front of large audiences and wrote about his experiences, collected here.

712 pages. Illustrated throughout with engravings, full-page plates, and the odd facsimile. BAL 3451.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, preferred issue with only one publisher on the title page; no indication of later printings, and the 11 signature mark on page 161). A very good copy. The elephant design on the front panel is rubbed; there is wear at the spine ends and the corners. Clean inside, with solid hinges. With the bookplate of Robert Collier, probably a physician, designed by C. Valentine Kirby in 1908, on the front pastedown.
