Signed Inspiration for Magical Realism
Pedro Páramo
Publication: México [Mexico City]: Fondo de Cultura Económica, 1959. Second Edition.
Notes: An inscribed copy of the second edition of the great 20th century Mexican novel, a story unmoored from time and reality that inspired the development of magical realism. For many years, the novel was a book admired by writers but with comparatively few readers. This second edition of 3,000 copies brought the total number of copies in print to just 5,000. Only decades later would Rulfo gain readers around the world becoming, most likely, the most widely read Mexican writer.
Signed copies of this book in any edition are quite scarce, even in Mexico.
152 pages. 4-3/4 by 7 inches.
Edition + Condition: Second edition (four years after the first). A very good or better copy, with a slight spine lean. The dust jacket has a few tears and is somewhat ragged at the edges. This copy is inscribed by the author, "Por Max Cymet Ramírez con la cordial amistad de Rulfo. Mex. III-67 [For Max Cymet Ramírez with the cordial friendship of Rulfo. Mexico City, March 1967]. The recipient earned his law degree from UNAM in 1971.
