Larry McMurtry's Western Film Source
Riders of Judgment [Larry McMurtry's Copy]
Publication: New York: Random House, 1957. First Edition.
Notes: Larry McMurtry's personal copy of the first edition of this Western novel, acquired during his Stanford fellowship and later adapted by him for television.
This copy has significance through its connection to McMurtry, who considered it among the best Western novels and eventually wrote the screenplay for its 2002 television adaptation as The Johnson County War. McMurtry noted in his memoir Roads that he "knew, a little, Frederick Manfred, the very tall Frisian-Sioux writer, the Minnesota romancier whose most enduring romance was probably with himself but who, nonetheless, among his forty or more books, wrote two or three that are pretty good," including this one.
368 pages.
Edition + Condition: First edition (stated). A very good copy in a very good dust jacket, which shows shallow chipping along the bottom edge and some loss at the top of the spine. McMurtry's ownership inscription on front free endpaper reads "Larry McMurtry San Francisco 1961," dating to his time as a Stegner fellow at Stanford.
