Dramatic Tavern Scene by Master Illustrator
Original Wash Painting of a Scene in a French Inn
Publication: 1908.
Notes: A dramatic original illustration by noted Scottish artist W. Russell Flint, likely created for Pall Mall or another magazine.
The scene captures a tense moment in a French tavern as a man prepares to throw his wine glass, with particular attention paid to a woman in a white headdress, demonstrating the skilled figure drawing that made Flint famous for his paintings of women. Signed and dated in the image. Apparently titled "Annette" in pencil on verso, with notations regarding published dimensions.
Original illustration. Image: 8-1/4 by 11-3/4 inches on larger illustration board. Black wash with white watercolor or gouache highlights.
Edition + Condition: Border around image somewhat tanned, production markings on verso, otherwise a fine example of Flint's early commercial work. Provenance: Sotheby Parke Bernet, April 8, 1976, lot 447A.
