A Small Killing

Publication: London: VG Graphics, 1991. First Edition.

Notes: A double-signed copy of this stand-alone graphic novel written by Alan Moore and illustrated by the Argentine artist (living in London), Oscar Zarate. Moore, the most acclaimed comic-book writer of his time, left mainstream comics after writing Watchmen for DC. Watchmen became the most successful graphic novel of all time and it has never been out of print since its first publication in 1986. Moore was cut out of the merchandising and other residuals.

"A Small Killing tells the story of a troubled advertising executive who lands a dream job but is plagued by visions of a strange child who seems to be an imp or a demonic presence... It is perhaps also a commentary on the distorting nature of money. The “small killing” of the title refers to financial success, but also the sacrifices and small compromises made along the way. It can be read as, at least in part, a commentary on Moore’s recent experiences with DC, and the troubles that can accompany success."—Cambridge History of the Graphic Novel.

The publisher, an imprint of the literary house Victor Gollancz, signaled the increasing mainstream interest in graphic novels.

8-7/8 by 11-3/4 inches.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, stating "First published..." on the copyright page), hardcover issue. There was a simultaneous paperback. This is a very good copy in illustrated boards; the bottom of the spine has a significant bump and a horizontal crack. The spine is not fade, however. The book is signed by both Moore and Zarate on the title page. Uncommon signed.
