Notes: A mystery featuring Navajo Tribal Police sergeant Jim Chee and border patrol officer Bernie Manuelito, here in a special edition with a full-page ink-and-pastel drawing by Franklin on the half-title. The illustration in this copy is of Office Manuelito and two oryxes.
Ernest Franklin was a Navajo artist who liked embellishing Hillerman's books with drawings reflecting Native culture.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, with a numberline ending in 1). A fine copy in a fine dust jacket, signed by Hillerman on the title page and by Franklin in his drawing. In a fine slipcase, as issued. This copy has a Christmas card laid in from Ernest Franklin and Ernie Bulow (who sold these special copies) to the late collector Tom Garner and the postcard prospectus for the book.
