Notes: A mystery featuring Navajo Tribal Police sergeant Jim Chee, Joe Leaphorn, and Bernie Manuelito, here in a special edition with a full-page ink-and-pastel drawing by Franklin on the half-title. The illustration in this copy is of Chee speaking into a walkie-talkie above a montage of a cup of gems and a skeleton hand.
Ernest Franklin was a Navajo artist who liked embellishing Hillerman's books with drawings reflecting Native culture.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, with a numberline ending in 1). A fine copy in a fine dust jacket, signed by Hillerman on the title page and by Franklin in his drawing. In a fine slipcase, as issued. This copy has a prospectus for the book laid in along with a bookplate signed by Hillerman telling a fan that Bernie and Chee would set a wedding date in this novel.
