Association Copy of a Pulitzer Prize Winning Biography
The Raven: A Biography of Sam Houston
Publication: Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1929. First Edition.
Notes: A good association copy of the first edition of this Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of one of the founding fathers of Texas.
"It's Sam with the dirty rawhide on, but not a juiced-up revisionist's debunking"—A. C. Greene, The Fifty Best Books on Texas, p. 81.
Edition + Condition: First edition (stated on the copyright page). A very good copy in red cloth stamped in gilt on the spine. In a fair example of the first state jacket, which is burgundy with white lettering and a hand-and-shoulder portrait of an elderly Houston in the upper left of the front panel. The jacket is split into several pieces and has significant chips missing from the spine ends and corners. Nevertheless, this is an uncommon book in the first state jacket (there were at least two other completely different jacket designs used; one for what may be the second printing, and a third, colorful design, with the Pulitzer Prize announcement).
This copy is inscribed: "For my good friends Mr. & Mrs. Grant Foreman whose invaluable assistance in the compilation of this volume is vastly appreciated by Marquis James. Pleasantville, NY. Dec. 17, 1929. This book was inscribed about two months after publication (reported to be during the week of Oct. 20 in newspaper accounts) to Carolyn and Grant Foreman, both noted Oklahoma historians.
A great association copy of a Pulitzer winner seldom found in the first edition.
