Notes: The capstone of Debo's career as one of the scholars who redefined American history in the mid-twentieth century by rewriting Indian history. Debo's survey of Native American history was published when she was 80 and it is still in print after more than fifty years.
The Sioux historian Vine Deloria Jr. reviewed the book in the Pacific Northwest Quarterly (October 1971), calling it "a significant contribution to literature on American Indian people." He writes that Debo was "an outstanding scholar" and that a "substantial portion of the material of this book consists of original source quotations that have not previously been used by any writer." As the author of Custer Died for Your Sins, it is not surprising that Deloria criticized Debo for not paying enough attention to the Native American movements of the 1960s.
Debo is hardly a household-name, yet her contributions to the writing of American history have been significant. At least seven of her thirteen books remain in print and several are classics in their field. This book was reissued by the Folio Society in 2003.

Edition + Condition: First edition (stated). A very good copy (some light spotting to the cloth) in a very good dust jacket with wear to the corners and a crease at the base of the spine. A scarce first edition.
NB: The correct first printing dust jacket is priced at $8.95 and has two lists of books on the back (verso), one listing 106 titles and the other 42. The text on the rear panel referring to the list is in bold and all caps.
