Cuban Immigrant's Latin American Anthology

Libro de lectura no. 3. O sea autores selectos españoles é hispano-americanos

Publication: New York: American Book Company, 1872.

Notes: Third edition of this Spanish reader for advanced students (books one and two were for children). The majority of the writers are from Spain, but there is a section of prose writers ("prosadores") from Latin America, with thirty examples by two dozen writers. The poetry section includes 8 Latin American poets, including José María Heredia and Juan Clemente Zenea.

Luis Felipe Mantilla (1833–1878) was born in Havana, Cuba, and moved to New York City in 1863 where he taught college Spanish (Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography, 1889).

This book (dated based on the introduction to the third edition) stayed in print with various publishers into the 20th century. It is an early anthology of Latin American writers published in the US.
