Why Did They Have to Lose the Slipcase?

Danse Macabre [Signed, Lettered]

Publication: New York: Everest House, 1981. First Edition.

Notes: One of 15 signed, lettered copies for private distribution of the first edition of King's first book-length work of non-fiction, an exploration of the horror genre. This is the smallest limitation of any Stephen King first edition (I think). The regular first printing was about 60,000 copies.

Drawing on his deep knowledge of the field, King examines horror in books, radio, and film from 1950 to 1980. The book grew from King's experiences teaching a course on supernatural literature at the University of Maine, bringing an accessible yet informed perspective to horror criticism. Throughout, King weaves personal experiences with critical analysis, creating what stands as both a memoir of his development as a writer and a thorough examination of what makes horror effective.

[2], [frontispiece portrait leaf], 400 pages.

Edition + Condition: First edition. Copy G of just 15 lettered copies, signed by King. A near fine to fine copy with a small color break in one corner of the cloth; glassine jacket creased, with short tears. LACKING the slipcase.

Provenance: Book Sail to James Strand (1983, $1000, with slipcase). This book was stolen in August 2023 during the looting of Strand's library after his death. Somewhere in the mayhem, the slipcase went missing. The book was recovered in its present condition by the FBI and eventually returned to the family. The thief was sentenced to six years in connection to the Strand theft but the bibliophile in me thinks that might not be enough for losing the slipcase. The FBI evidence tag is laid in; the small Strand estate bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown.
