Scarce Review Copy, Inscribed
Cujo
Publication: New York: The Viking Press, 1981. First Edition.
Notes: A nicely inscribed first edition of this horror novel about a rabid dog, adapted for the 1983 movie of the same title.
319 pages.
Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing). A near fine copy in a like dust jacket (some bumping to the spine ends). This copy has one of King's standard good inscriptions, referring to the book. Next to good personal inscriptions, these are the best copies around. This copy is inscribed in blue ink, "For James—Best...and don't let the dog bite! Stephen King. 4/17/82." Copies of Cujo with "don't let the dog bite" inscriptions have grown difficult to find. With the uncommon review slip and press release laid in.
PROVENANCE: Eric Kramer of Fantasy Archives got King to inscribe a half-dozen books to James Strand at the 3rd NECon, held in Providence, Rhode Island. King was the "roastee" at the convention dinner. The book was stolen from Strand's house after his death in August 2023; purchased by a Washington state bookseller; spotted at the Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair; and returned to the Strand family. With the small Strand estate bookplate mounted to the inside front cover.
