Thinner

Publication: New York: New American Library, 1984. First Edition.

Notes: A beautiful first printing of the final novel published as Richard Bachman before bookstore clerk Steve Brown exposed King's pseudonym through copyright records.

This supernatural revenge tale follows a lawyer who begins losing weight uncontrollably after being cursed by a Romani man he wronged. Published just before Brown's detective work forced King to acknowledge his pen name, Thinner represents the last Bachman book to appear while the pseudonym remained technically secret, marking the end of King's experiment in publishing without his celebrity status.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, with a numberline ending in 1). Fine copy in fine dust jacket. A superb example showing almost no discernible wear. One could hardly ask for a better copy.

This copy comes from the collection of James Strand, whose extensive horror-book collection was stolen from his home in Portland after he died. This is one of the books that was looted; the FBI found it in a storage unit in Oregon City, and the original evidence tag is laid in. This copy has the small Strand estate bookplate affixed to the front pastedown.
