Copy 1, Inscribed to Dunsany's Mother-in-Law

The Chronicles of Rodriguez [Signed, Numbered]

Publication: London and New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1922.

Notes: A rare association copy of Dunsany's first novel, copy 1 inscribed by Dunsany to his mother-in-law. One of 500 copies also signed by the author below his preface and by the illustrator on the frontispiece.

Dunsany's "first novels unequivocally set out to occupy what might be called the domain of fantasy... The Chronicles of Rodriguez conveys its young disinherited protagonist through a fantasied Spain, gifting him with a Sancho Panza companion, good luck with magicians, and a castle."—Clute and Grant, Encyclopedia of Fantasy.

Quarterbound in vellum paper over terra cotta cloth boards. Spine label stamped in gilt.

[4:blank], [limitation leaf], [2], [frontispiece], [tissue guard], [8], 322, [6:blank] pages. 7-1/2 by 10-1/4 inches.

Edition + Condition: An extraordinary copy, numbered 1 and inscribed by the author to his mother-in-law, "To Lady Jersey the first of these Chronicles from Dunsany. March 24th 1922." The book is very good, with soiling to the vellum paper spine, shelfwear to the bottom edge and foxing to the pages. Lacking the scarce dust jacket. A seemingly unrelated letter, from Elizabeth Anson (editor of Mary Hamilton...at Court and at Home) to Lady Jersey is mounted opposite Dunsany's inscription.
