Edition + Condition: First UK edition (first printing with a numberline ending in 1). A near fine copy (pages tanned, as usual) in a fine dust jacket. This copy is inscribed by Johnson to the novelist and Iowa Writers' Workshop teacher Chris Offutt: "Chris—Your friendship is very important to me. Stay ALIVE like you are—Dennis. 1/3/03. PHX AZ." Signed copies of this title (either US or UK) are uncommon. Books signed by Johnson to other writers are decidedly scarce.
Offutt interviewed Johnson as part of Portland, Oregon's Tin House writers workshop in the summer of 2003; he also publicly confirmed on Twitter Johnson's death from cancer in 2017. Johnson won the National Book Award for his novel Tree of Smoke.
