Stolen + Recovered by the FBI

The Juvies

Publication: New York: Ace Books, 1961. First Edition.

Notes: A collection of short stories offering a grim look at gangs and juvenile delinquents in New York City. Each story has a short introduction about its factual basis (or supposed factual basis, I'm not sure).

Ellison is best known for his speculative fiction, for which he won eight Hugo awards.

Ace mass market, D-513. 189, [3:ads] pages.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, with no indication of later printings). A near fine copy in wrappers.

Provenance: Powell's City of Books to James Strand (1998, $200); stolen from his home after his death in August 2023; recovered by the FBI from a storage unit in Oregon City and returned to the family. With the Strand estate's letterpress bookplate on the inside front cover and the associated evidence tag. Is it ironic that this book was stolen by the sort of people described in the book, only sixty years later on the other coast?
