Notes: A novel set in 1957 during civil rights protests in Memphis, Tennessee, in which a trio of white ne-'er-do-wells—a gambler, a criminal, and a girlfriend—kidnap the young son of black entrepreneur.
The book was filmed as Memphis, a made-for-TV movie co-written by Larry McMurtry and Cybill Shepherd, who starred in The Last Picture Show, a film based on one of McMurtry's novels. Shepherd also starred in Memphis alongside J. E. Freeman and John Laughlin.
Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing stating First Edition with a numberline ending in 2, which was the publisher's way of identifying first printings at the time). A near fine copy but for a remainder mark on the bottom edge. In a dust jacket with short tears and wear at the corners. This copy is inscribed to the bibliographer (Harry Crews, Henry Miller) Michael Hargraves, "For Michael Hargraves, displaced in Frisco, from Shelby Foote. Memphis Nov. 1982." There is another signature on the rear endpaper.
