Late Fante, Very Scarce Signed
The Brotherhood of the Grape
Publication: Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1977. First Edition.
Notes: A very seldom seen signed copy of this autobiographical novel about a writer who returns home to care for his difficult father. By the time this book was published, Fante was suffering severe complications from diabetes, including the amputation that year of toes and feet.
Fante is best-known for his book Ask the Dust, one of the great LA novels.
Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, with a numberline ending in 1). A very good or better copy in a dust jacket that has some chipping along the top edge and at the spine ends. It is inscribed, "Dr. Katzman—for helping people. John Fante." It is at least possible that the recipient was one of the physicians treating Fante near the end of his life.
This novel is quite scarce signed.
