Weimar-Era Woodcuts

45 Holzschnitte zu Goethe's Reineke Fuchs [45 Woodcuts Illustrating Goethe's Reynard the Fox]

Publication: [Weimar, Germany]: [1920s].

Notes: A suite of 45 wood engravings plus an engraved title sheet used to illustrate an edition of Goethe's poetic retelling of the story of Reynard the Fox. Klemm, a German artist born in Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad, Czech Republic), was well-known for his animals and ideally suited to illustrate this moral fable of the cunning fox. The fox causes mischief but also finds itself in serious trouble.

This suite of images was issued without a publisher's imprint and is usually dated to about 1920.

"Walther Klemm loves to experiment in his engraving, and since his pictorial motives are so varied, he is always interesting."—The New Woodcut in The Studio, Spring 1930.
