3rd State Jacket
The Purcell Papers [$8.95 Issue]
Publication: Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1975. First Edition.
Notes: A selection of stories from the Victorian-era master. According to Joshi, A Night in the Bell Inn is not by Sheridan but by Henry Farris and the attribution of The Legend of Dunblane to Le Fanu is "debatable."
One of 4,288 copies. Jacket art by Frank Utpatel. According to Jaffrey, there are three states of the dust jacket: copies with the original $7.00 printed price and copies with $7.95 and $8.95 price stickers.
Joshi, Eighty Years of Arkham House, 132. Jaffrey, The Arkham House Companion, 138.
Edition + Condition: First edition (one and only printing; third state jacket). A fine copy with a James Strand estate bookplate in a very near fine jacket with minor color breaks to the black jacket background. The white lettering on the spine is still white.
This copy came from the important Arkham House collection assembled by James Strand of Portland, Oregon. It is likely that he had all three issues of the jacket—he was an obsessive completist. After his death, in August 2023, his house was looted and most of his books were stolen. Some were subsequently recovered by the FBI. This book was among those not taken by thieves.
