Strange Harvest
Publication: Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1965. First Edition.
Notes: Weird tales, mostly published in the pulps in the 1930s.
2000 copies. Jacket art by the author's brother, Howard Wandrei.
Joshi, Eighty Years of Arkham House, 85; Jaffrey, The Arkham House Companion, 92. Jaffrey records a copy with spine lettering running from the bottom to the top probably meaning that the book was bound upside down. This may be a one-off error; I checked the copy Wandrei inscribed to Derleth and it has a regular spine so calling one variant "first" probably places too much confidence in the priority of production.
Edition + Condition: First edition (first and only Arkham printing, variant with correct spine lettering). A fine, tight copy in a fine dust jacket. With the Lovecraft-inspired letterpress bookplate of the James Strand estate on the front pastedown.
This copy came from the important Arkham House collection assembled by James Strand of Portland, Oregon. After his death, in August 2023, his house was looted and most of his books were stolen. Some were subsequently recovered by the FBI. This book was among those not taken by thieves.
