Former FBI Evidence
The Dark Half
Publication: New York: Viking Press, 1989. First US edition.
Notes: A novel about a novelist whose pseudonym is out to get him. The author's note thanks King's own pseudonym: "I'm indebted to the late Richard Bachman for his help and inspiration. This novel could not have been written without him."
The British edition of this novel was published before this American first edition.
431 pages.
Edition + Condition: First American edition (first printing, with a numberline ending in 1). A fine copy in a fine, completely unfaded dust jacket (the orange spine lettering still glows). Despite a print run reported at more than a million copies, examples without fading to the spine are surprisingly scarce.
This copy was stolen from the library of the late James Strand in August 2023; the FBI recovered in the course of their investigation and the original evidence tag is laid in. A small Strand estate bookplate is mounted to the front pastedown. Strand's library had no natural light expressly to prevent spine fading.
